Pokemon

Pokémon from video game company Nintendo was created by Satoshi Tajiri during the early - mid 1990s. After about five years in development Pokémon was first released over ten years ago for the hand-held Game Boy as interlinkable interactive role-playing video games to play individually or with friends. Pokémon and the Mario series which are both from Nintendo are currently the two most popular video game properties in the world. Pokémon merchandise now includes trading card games, manga, televison series, films, anime, books, toys and collectibles.

The name Pokémon stems from the Japanese brand, "Pocket Monsters" and also collectively refers to the 493 fictional Pokémon species which includes the latest 107 new Pokémon species released with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for Nintendo DS. Satoshi Tajiri collected insects as a child. As the Tokyo suburbs became more urbanised the countryside of his youth were lost and with it the wildlife collecting opportunities. Pokémon gives today’s children the opportunity to collect their own creatures.

Pokémon Players, or Pokémon Trainers as they are known, compete to catalog the various Pokémon species they collect using a Poké Ball by completing the Pokédex. They also have to create and train a team of powerful Pokémon from those they have captured. They battle against those teams from other Trainers to try and become the Pokémon Master.
